"Don't be afraid!" This is something that is usually said to someone who looks afraid. The angel said these words to Mary before telling her that she had found favour with God and will have a child who she will call Jesus (Lk 1:30,31). Wow God incarnate coming to this earth as a child, a little human; fully God and fully man. "Don't be afraid!" The angel said to some shepherds. "I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord" (Lk 2:10,11).
This is the season that we love, our Saviour came to this earth to save us from the consequence of our sin; He came to bring us Life and life in its fullest. So as a faith community what is our response and our responsibility? We know the Saviour and we know what Christmas is all about. We also know that some of the offshoots of this are around gifts, holidays and family time. These in themselves are not bad, but they can cloud the real meaning, the reason for the season. The angel would say to us also, "Don't be afraid!" We need to let people know what Christmas is actually about. It is not for us to deny Christ, but to honour him and let all know. There will be many opportunities over the next month to have this korero with people.
"Don't be afraid!" The Saviour of the world has come!
