One of my favourite psalms is Psalm 139. I am encouraged by God's amazing love and knowledge of me and especially verse 14 "…because I am fearfully and wonderfully made". Prior to this in verse 13 the Psalmist tells how God has "created my inmost being and you knit me together in my mother's womb". He knows us before we were even born.
Along with this precious gift of life God has also given us freedom to choose. However since the fall we have the tendency to choose evil over good. Genesis 6:5 "The LORD saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time. "
Even as a precious daughter of God I can make evil choices which harm me and others. This idea of freedom to choose must be addressed with a great deal of caution which is why I am disturbed by the recent commitment for a review of the abortion laws. One US report states that over 95 percent of the abortions performed today involve women who simply do not want to have a baby. Less than 5 percent of abortions are for the reasons of rape, incest, or the mother's health at risk.
The reason given in a recent TV leader's debate, for making a change, was:
"People need to be able to make their own decision. I want women who want access to be able to have it as a right."
Much like the "End of Life Choice" Bill. At each end of our linear progression through life, we are generally most at risk, vulnerable and freedom to choose is taken from us.
Thank goodness we have, as a right, access to a God of grace, love, redemption and forgiveness. I'm praying for those children who are NEVER given a choice.
